Brothers Egbert and Anton Brink, both metal casters by profession, founded Brink en van Keulen in 1946, together with Marinus Leendert van Keulen. They had a workshop on the Koudehorn in Haarlem. At the request and idea of Canneman, chief architect at the Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg, the company specialised in making brass chandeliers, manufacturing replicas of old Dutch crowns and restoring old crowns. Anton Brink's son Willem also worked in the business for many years, learning the trade from his father. Followed by his daughter Sabine, the third generation of the Brink family business.
The single-layered Brink 1953.09 chandelier, with its ornate 19th-century style, illuminates spaces with nine gracefully curved brass arms. Measuring 65 cm high and 100 cm wide, this imposing antique fixture features delicate metal scrollwork along its expansive circular frame. Originally designed in the Dutch era of luxurious ornamentation, this hollow brass chandelier is modernly designed for contemporary settings. With its handcrafted details and decadent glow, the imposing Brink 1953.09 combines antiquity with contemporary functionality. The chandelier demonstrates the creative mastery of classic Dutch lighting design.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. In addition, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels earth. After the crown is lacquered, the parts are assembled by skilled craftsmen. Electric crowns have curved hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being assembled, electrical wiring and lighting components are discreetly inserted.
Brink & van Keulen, a family business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing brass chandeliers of the highest calibre. Chandeliers by Brink en van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transfer of knowledge over many generations, Brink & van Keulen has made an important contribution to the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The company is the only manufacturer of chandeliers with original casting moulds from the 17th century in the whole of Europe.
