The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is one of 16 national museums in the Netherlands. Its collection includes pieces by 17th-century Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals and provides an overview of Dutch art and history. The Rijksmuseum has been housed in the building designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers since 1885. The 2-storey Rijksmuseum 800.3 model is a faithful copy of the spherical chandelier that hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The 800.1 model is similar to the upper chandelier and the 800.2 is similar to the lower chandelier.
Reflecting the aesthetics of Dutch design, the Rijksmuseum 800.2 single-tier chandelier illuminates spaces with six gracefully extending arms of solid brass. This is the lower tier of the Rijksmuseum. At 62 cm high and 85 cm wide, this imposing yet elegant fixture is a Golden Age original from the renowned Rijksmuseum collection. Ornate curling metalwork surrounds the round frame and is an example of intricate decorations made centuries ago. Although inspired by a historical piece, this handsome chandelier is wired along its arms for contemporary use. With its rich, lustrous sheen and masterful construction, the Rijksmuseum 800.2 is a tribute to Holland's treasured metal art heritage.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. They are also still cast the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels earth. After the crown is varnished, skilled craftsmen assemble the parts. Electric wires run subtly along the arms as they are made of solid brass. The arms and curls are soldered together. As the crowns are assembled, electrical wiring and lighting components are discreetly placed.

Chandeliers by Brink en van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transfer of knowledge over many generations, Brink & van Keulen has made an important contribution to the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The company is the only manufacturer of chandeliers with original casting moulds from the 17th century in the whole of Europe.
