Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors besides his famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring". In the painting "The Art of Painting", a magnificent golden chandelier hangs above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers allowed artists to demonstrate their expertise in rendering shimmering and refracting brass under changing lighting conditions. A true testament to their craftsmanship and artistry.
Reminiscent of an ornate 19th-century style, the Vermeer 107 chandelier lights up with six gracefully extending brass arms. At just 50 cm high and 54 cm wide, this golden fixture is a sophisticated appearance, accentuated by curling metal embellishments that frame the circular frame. Although modelled centuries ago, the hollow brass chandelier is modernly wired for use and bathes today's spaces in a soft radiance. Harking back to an era of grand candlelit halls, the small Vermeer 107 pendant honours the Dutch history of metalwork with its warm, understated beauty and delicately curved silhouette.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. In addition, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels soil. After the crown is lacquered, the parts are assembled by skilled craftsmen. Electric crowns have curved hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being assembled, electrical wiring and lighting components are discreetly inserted.
