Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors besides his famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring". In the painting "The Art of Painting", a magnificent golden chandelier hangs above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers allowed artists to demonstrate their expertise in rendering shimmering and refracting brass under changing lighting conditions. A true testament to their craftsmanship and artistry.
This sophisticated Vermeer 117 single-storey chandelier is a remarkable example of the refined taste of Dutch lighting design in the 19th century. Twelve elegantly curved hollow brass arms support the imposing 82 cm round fixture, expertly crafted from this material. The central medallion, decorated with a delicate knob ornament, is the highlight of intricate metal ribbons flowing around the frame. This ancient chandelier,65 cm / 25.5 inch tall and dominantly present, is modernly wired and ready for use. The chandelier is reminiscent of the splendour of 19th-century Holland, when regal pendants lit up royal galleries and ballrooms across the country.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. Moreover, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels earth. After the crown is lacquered, the parts are assembled by skilled craftsmen. Electric crowns have curved hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being assembled, the electrical wiring and lighting components are secretly fitted.
