Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors besides his famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring". In the painting "The Art of Painting", a magnificent golden chandelier hangs above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers allowed artists to demonstrate their expertise in rendering shimmering and refracting brass under changing lighting conditions. A true testament to their craftsmanship and artistry.
A paragon of 19th century Dutch craftsmanship, the Vermeer 109 chandelier exudes elegance with its single70 cm / 27.5 inch wide tier illuminated by 6 gracefully curved brass arms. Expertly crafted from hollow brass, this antique chandelier has a delicate profile57 cm / 22.5 inch tall. The round frame is decorated with intricate metal scrollwork reminiscent of the ornamental styles that graced palaces and mansions of the era. Although modelled centuries ago, this chandelier is modernly wired for use today. With its warmth and subtle grandeur, the gold-coloured Vermeer 109 pendant honours the renowned Dutch traditions of metalwork.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. Moreover, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels earth. After the crown is lacquered, the parts are assembled by skilled craftsmen. Electric crowns have curved hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being assembled, electrical wiring and lighting components are discreetly inserted.
