Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors besides his famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring". In the painting "The Art of Painting", a magnificent golden chandelier hangs above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers allowed artists to demonstrate their expertise in rendering shimmering and refracting brass under changing lighting conditions. A true testament to their craftsmanship and artistry.
Displaying the hallmarks of 17th-century Dutch craftsmanship, the Vermeer 116 single-storey chandelier makes a strong impression with its 74 cm-wide brass frame and 12 gently curved arms. The brass fixture is substantial at about 60 cm tall, but the curled decorations that spiral around the circumference give the chandelier a delicate look. This antique chandelier is reminiscent of the sparkling, candle-lit halls of the rich at a time when lavish lighting was highly sought after to illuminate the palaces and mansions of Europe. Today, the Vermeer 116, adapted for contemporary use, pays homage to Holland's Golden Age.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. In addition, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels soil. After the crown is lacquered, the parts are assembled by skilled craftsmen. Electric crowns have curved hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being assembled, electrical wiring and lighting components are discreetly inserted.
