Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors besides his famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring". In the painting "The Art of Painting", a magnificent golden chandelier hangs above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers allowed artists to demonstrate their expertise in rendering shimmering and refracting brass under changing lighting conditions. A true testament to their craftsmanship and artistry.
The aesthetic brilliance of 19th-century Dutch lighting design is best exemplified by this imposing Vermeer 119 two-tier chandelier. Each of the two82 cm / 32.5 inch wide tiers is lit by eighteen beautifully curved arms beautifully crafted of hollow brass. The frame of each round tier is adorned with intricate metal curls that converge at a pendant sculpted in the centre. Standing80 cm / 31.5 inch tall, this showpiece is electrically wired for the present. The polished brass glows softly, evoking memories of the bygone Golden Age, when opulent pendants adorned aristocratic mansions across Europe.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. They are also still cast the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels earth. After the crown is lacquered, skilled craftsmen assemble the parts. Electric crowns have curved hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being assembled, electrical wiring and lighting components are discreetly fitted.
