Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors besides his famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring". In the painting "The Art of Painting", a magnificent golden chandelier hangs above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers allowed artists to demonstrate their expertise in rendering shimmering and refracting brass under changing lighting conditions. A true testament to their craftsmanship and artistry.
A stunning example of 17th-century Dutch lighting design, the Vermeer 110 chandelier attracts attention with its 74 cm wide solid brass frame and eight gently extending arms. With curling metal accents surrounding the body, this stunning antique fixture retains a subtle beauty despite its height of about 60 cm. This timeless sculpture evokes memories of the Golden Age, when grand halls and public spaces were lit by candlelit chandeliers. The Vermeer 110 pays homage to the masterful brassware of its time, but is electrified for contemporary use.
Description
Original historical moulds from that era are used to make the brass parts. In addition, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels earth. After the crown is lacquered, the parts are assembled by skilled craftsmen. Electric crowns have curved hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being assembled, electrical wiring and lighting components are discreetly inserted.
